INTERVIEW: SUCRE (STACY KING)

Sucré is a three piece musical act composed of vocalist Stacy Dupree-King (Eisley), her husband and drummer Darren King (Mutemath) and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Larson (Fort Christmas). Their debut album, A Minor Bird, was released on April 10, 2012.

The album was made over the course of two years, with no motive other than creating music that they would love to listen to. When Stacy asked Jeremy if he would like to collaborate with her they, unknowingly, had the same thing in mind. Also sharing another common interest in their favorite drummer, Darren, they asked him to also collaborate with them. The magical trio was then formed.

First off tell us about yourself. How did you know you wanted to be a musician?

I guess it had to be really early on. I wrote my first song when I was eight. I remember asking for the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" on tape for my birthday and listening to it all day long. I remember feeling kind of obsessed over them. When I look back, that's when it all came in to focus.

Sucre is your side project with your husband, Darren King of MuteMath, and producer Jeremy Larson.  How did this side project come up? How would you say it differs from Eisley?

This project was born during a time when my husband Darren and I were engaged. Eisley was in a bit of a lull due to label issues, so I felt eager to write some new material.  Darren and I spent a lot of time in his hometown of Springfield, Missouri and he introduced me to his friend Jeremy who had a studio there. I instantly loved the music Jeremy was making and felt that he would be a great person to collaborate with. We started emailing music back and forth and things just started to take shape. We finished the Sucré record about a year later and decided to release it independently.

For Sucre’s music video for “When We Were Young” you wore one of Jeremy Larson’s wife’s (Elsie Larson) dresses and also used Jeremy's studio (above Red Velvet) to shoot the video. Do you all have any other collaborations coming up? How did this magical, D.I.Y, idea for the video come up?

It was sort of a no-brainer that we would make our own video. Everything Sucre has done so far has been based upon the idea that we can do it ourselves. It's just our mindset and I feel that it works very well. I envisioned the dress I wanted, Elsie designed it and Darren directed the video along with the help of all of our Springfield friends. It was a beautiful experience and it was so fun to have everyone working together.

You all did a beautiful performance of “When We Were Young” for the charity Invisible Children. Will any of you ever do any other collaboration with charities?

Most likely! We would love to be involved with more organizations!

You and your husband are both very talented musicians and you’re also surrounded with a bundle of other talented musicians. Is there a lot of synergy?

Thank You! Absolutely. I think it's wonderful to be around so many people that I truly admire. From a young age I've always looked up to musicians who were older and used them as motivation to be better myself. I think it's important to be around other musicians and form strong relationships. I think we artists help each other a lot more than we'd like to admit. I feel really thankful to know so many amazing ones.

Your family itself has a lot of musicians. Do you have high hopes of your baby to be a musician when they grow up?

Not really. I will only try to encourage them to do what they love, like my parents did with me. Of course I would hope that they would have some sort of general love for music, but I won’t try to push them in any particular way.

What/who do you think changed the music industry? Why?

I think there are a thousand people who have changed it. It's constantly changing!

I sort of have no idea with that question. The music industry is not something I have my head wrapped around entirely and I'm sort of okay with that.

Is there a moment that sticks out in your head that made you realize that this is the perfect job for you?

In my mind I guess I don't think of it as a job, but more like a hobby or way of living. It's always been that for me ever since I was 14 years old on tour for the first time. I just hoped I'd be doing it forever and I still am, so I'm very thankful.

What’s your favorite song of yours? Why?

I like Chemical Reaction. It reminds me to feel young and new.

What/ who do you look to for inspiration?

Other artists, fashion photography, nature, relationships.

What inspires and motivates you to still pursue a career in music?

I suppose I still feel that I have more songs to give and hopefully more hearts to inspire.

What would your dream tour lineup be?

Sucre, Midlake, Little Dragon

Has there been a specific night a show really sticks out in your memory (in either Eisley or Sucre)?

Oh yes! All the time. Mostly it's due to the crowd being wonderful. I love an attentive, sweet and excited crowd.

Lastly, if people haven’t heard of Sucre (or Eisley), what songs would you tell them to listen to?

Say Something and Chemical Reaction (both by Sucré).
